Recent advances in aerospace and defense applications have required the use of high-speed data links that are compact, lightweight, and insensitive to harsh environments. 

There is a wide array of aerospace and defense applications ideally suited for PLC-based solutions. On the ground, optical systems are used for perimeter defense & security around airports and military bases.  In the air, applications range from streaming movies to passengers on an in-flight entertainment system, to managing gigabits-per-second of very high-resolution video within an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).  Enablence has appropriate technologies available to design and develop PLC-based to meet the size, weight, and ruggedness required for such applications.

PLCs are extremely well suited for this market.  For a given size and weight, the amount of functionality that can be built on a Planar Lightwave Circuit far exceeds what can be built using traditional optics. Competing platforms may include dozens of small piece-parts each actively aligned to one another, making them susceptible to vibration and mechanical shock. A comparable PLC is effectively a single optical chip, making it a very rugged, compact, lightweight platform. In addition, optical signals are not affected by electromagnetic interference (EMI), which is increasingly important in modern aircraft built from composite materials.
