Empowering the Optical Interconnect

As computer processors, servers, and data centers continue to evolve, so too do the optical clocking and interconnect requirements for these applications. But traditional technology for mainstream and specialized computing devices is reaching the practical limits for speed and length due to electro-magnetic interference, heat and other issues.

Optical is the obvious alternative to address these high-performance challenges today and for the foreseeable future. Enablence’s integrated PLC technology combines hundreds of optical subcomponents onto a single miniature chip, fabricated using reliable and repeatable wafer manufacturing techniques.

Our PLC platform allows for optical sources and detectors to be integrated with on-chip waveguides for distribution of optical signals. This can enable optical clocking for high-speed processors, and high-bandwidth interconnects for chip-to-chip or board-to-board communications. Enablence optical detectors are being used by Intel as part of its next generation Light Peak optical communication link to connect CPUs with high capacity storage and display devices.

In addition to photonics working inside computers, there is growing demand for high-speed optical interconnects between computers. These requirements range from low-cost active optical cables, and even optical HDMI cables, to advanced components used in 40G and 100G parallel data links.

Enablence optical waveguide-based components operate completely independent of the underlying data rate. Even active components such as high-speed photodetectors operating as high as 25 and 40 Gbps are manufactured in-house at Enablence. This high degree of vertical integration within the company means that we can address your most demanding applications.
