Optical Layout and Design Engineer
Ottawa, ON
About Us:
Enablence is a market-leading manufacturer of innovative integrated optical products for the communications, metaverse, and bio-chemical sensing industries. Enablence products are marketed globally and are critical to just about every fiber optics in the world. Our technology center has successfully developed photonic integrated circuits (PICs) used for data centers, telecom, VR, LIDAR, and other sensing sub-assembly and module products. Enablence is headquartered in Ottawa, Canada. Enablence USA Components is set up with R&D and manufacturing.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a mathematically minded Optical Layout and Design Engineer to join our photonics design team. This position is centered on a code-driven design framework. You will be responsible for translating complex optical architectures into physical mask layouts using Python and sophisticated geometric logic.
This is a "bridge" role where you will work at the intersection of mathematical design, physical fabrication, and experimental validation. Beyond just "drawing" waveguides, you will be building the algorithmic foundation of our 2% refractive index contrast Planar Lightwave Circuit (PLC) platform.
Responsibilities:
Computational Layout: Develop and maintain parametric layout cells and full-chip routing using Python within a collaborative Git-based environment.
Geometric Architecture: Utilize complex coordinate geometry and matrix transformations to define precise optical paths, adiabatic transitions, and high-density routing.
Data Analysis and "Closing the Loop": Write Python scripts to pull experimental results from MongoDB, analyze optical performance (loss, phase, spectra), and provide feedback to the design team.
Cross-Functional Collaboration: Communicate with foundries regarding mask specifications and collaborate with test engineers to ensure chip functionality is easily accessible.
Culture & Growth: Participate in in-person brainstorming and design reviews to help foster a collaborative engineering culture.
Wafer-Level Organization: Design and manage the spatial mapping of stepper mask fields across the wafer. You will ensure that every die is uniquely identifiable to enable seamless correlation between physical location and experimental test data.
Requirements:
High proficiency in geometry, trigonometry, and matrix algebra. You should be comfortable thinking about physical space through a mathematical lens.
Strong experience writing clean, modular Python code in a professional IDE (e.g., PyCharm). Familiarity with version control (Git) is essential.
A natural tendency toward meticulous data management and spatial organization (essential for wafer-mapping and mask-level tracking).
We are open to a wide range of quantitative degrees, including Math, Computer Science, Physics, or Electrical Engineering.
Professional Level: Junior to mid-level. We are looking for an adaptable, "moldable" engineer who is eager to learn our specific methodology and grow with the team.
Willingness to Communicate: You don’t need to be an expert communicator yet, but you must be willing to engage with external foundries and internal test teams (with full mentorship provided).
